Precarious growth paths for India's Internet based businesses and emerging convergence of technologies

The year 2009 witnessed a number of important developments in India that will set the stage further rapid development in the Internet arena. Mobile subscriptions have touched ~440M (both GSM and CDMA inclusive) putting a lot of pressure on the spectrum available to permit further growth. DTH subscriptions have touched 25 million out of an estimated 150 million Pay TV analog cable subscriptions. More players are entering this emerging market thereby increasing competition and increasing addressable market size. IPTV service is now available in the market that brings new players and changing the nature of competition. Although 2010 promised to take these growth figures to the next level, it also exposed the delicate fault lines that this growth is based on. Globally the trend seems to be towards convergence into Internet based businesses, something India would find hard to buck. This implies pressure on India's internet infrastructure - although each national service provider / operator owns long distance fiber optic networks, Internet numbering resource (IP addresses) are scarce. India has ~18 million IP addresses - grossly insufficient in the context of the growth stories in question. Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) estimate that by mid-2012, we would run out of IPv4 addresses that would put us in a precarious situation. India also has one of the world’s largest installed capacity of dark fiber at 670,000 Kms and one of the world’s lowest utilization at <2%.

Preparing for IPv6 deployment seems to be a prudent option in the face of the growth potential, convergence of technologies, the impending IPv4 address shortage and abundance of dark fiber. It is important to learn IPv6 deployment best practises, impact of IPv6 on traditional application models and explore potential new business opportunities with the extensibility brought about by deploying IPv6

IPv6 India Summit Theme - IPv6 Deployment

IPv6 Forum India has organized annual IPv6 Summits since 2001 with the objective of serving as periodic reviews of IPv6 deployment issues in India and around the world. This year, the India IPv6 Summit will focus on core IPv6 deployment topics covering IPv6 readiness, IPv6-IPv4 coexistence, IPv6 transition planning ready reckoners and IPv6 based Greenfield applications.

This year’s summit is of, by and for service providers centered around IPv6 deployment. There are a few developments in Indian service provider market and environment that are related to network scalability, reliability, new applications and services - notably the rise of DTH as a credible alternative to conventional cable networks, followed by IPTV launches by main providers BSNL and MTNL. DSL penetration has also scaled to a level where mere bandwidth is no longer a differentiation and the search is ON for other differentiators. The context of IP addresses has also changed now, with the RIR's making public the issues of IP address shortage and possible exhaustion by 2012. All this calls for a comprehensive review of the state of the Internet in India (in general) and its connotations for IPv6 readiness and deployment.

Briefly, the agenda of the Summit is as follows -

- Review of the state of the internet in India
- Review of the state of IPv6 readiness in India
- IPv6 deployment roadmaps of major service providers
- IPv6 awareness and deployment readiness with Enterprises
- Technologies for Greenfield applications (Sensor networks, telemetry, Cable etc.)
- Lessons and learnings from Worldwide

The IPv6 Forum India

Since it’s incorporation in 2000, the IPv6 forum India - a registered not-for-profit society – has provided a unique and a successful educational platform for networking professionals to learn from their peers and other leaders in the networking community from across the world.
The forum, driven by Networking professionals with a commitment to IPv6 and the backing of the industry, has met with a fair amount of success in implementing its charter of spreading awareness about IPv6 and consolidating deployment efforts across the country.
Over the last 9 years the IPv6 Forum India has hosted various events – Five Global IPv6 summits in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006; one IPv6 Interoperability showcase in 2002; IPv6 roundtable Symposium for CEO’s in 2005; and more than 20 technology focused workshops – for the networking community in the Indian subcontinent.
Other Major achievements of the IPv6 Forum in the recent years have been:
 CEO awareness building
 Liaison with the government
 IPv6 as an agenda in the Government’s 10 point programme
 Formal EU cooperation with the Indian government facilitated
 Facilitated an initiation of a IPv6 study for India through the TRAI
 Working with agencies like the ISPAI and NIXI etc. to facilitate transition to v6
This year, the Forum will be hosting the IPv6 India Summit between the dates December 15-16 at The Park Hotel, Sansad Marg, New Delhi
The conference will be hosted for 2 days and will cover topics pertaining to IPv6 deployment updates in the industry, followed by IPv6 transition best practices, innovation and Greenfield applications with IPv6 by a host of invited talks from national and international speakers
The key areas of focus in the conference are:

 Operations and deployment strategies
 Network Monitoring & Management for native IPv6 networks
 Enterprise wide IPv6
 QoS in IPv6
 Security and Privacy in IPv6
 Enterprise Applications & Interoperability
 Transition roadmaps for IPv6

Who Should Attend

This unique event has focused content that is tailor made to suit the information needs of application developers, network operators & integrators, technology and business consultants, business heads of leading service providers, large network users and the policy makers in the government and its various regulatory bodies. The content is rich and focused on two areas – current operational issues as well as the near future directions. We invite you to join us at this summit for this review and be a part of the IPv6 Forum India team in driving these efforts in 2010.
